bharatnattyam
Bharatnatyam, is compounded from 'bah' for Brava or emotional projection, 'Ra' for raga or melody and 'ta' for tala or rhythm, Natyam means the art of dance it is one of the oldest Indian Classical dance forms is in essence a dedicatory dance.

chhau
The word 'Chhau' is traced to the Sanskrit word 'Chhaya' which means shade, referring to the mask used by the dancers. Others aver, it is derived from the word 'Chhauni' where the pharikhanda (shield and sword) soldiers stayed.

kathak
Kathaks were originally story-tellers or troubadours who used to dance to illustrate 'Kathas' or stories. They were attached to the temples of North India.

kathakali
Kerala presents to the country, one of the most imposing and colourful spectacles of dance - Kathakali.

manipuri
Descendents of Gandharvas, as they regard themselves to be, Manipuri's have song and dance woven into their life, love for dance reflects their rich lore of legend and mythology.

mohiniattam
Mohini Attam is one of the youngest Indian Classical dances, which means a maiden who excites desire in her dance.
