Bireshwar Kumar Pal (Gautam) passed away
Bireshwar Gautam, the unique Kathak dancer and thumri singer with an outstanding talent, has sadly passed away. He leaves behind a legacy that had a passion to learn the history of his beloved art forms and yet experiment to evolve with the changing tides.
His good nature, his sense of humour and above all his Dedication to an art which he had become a master of, will be missed by all who know him and audiences everywhere who saw him perform.

Mrs Maitreyee Sarcar has stepped down as Company Secretary with effect
from 23 July 2009. She is one of the founder member of Surdhwani and has given invaluable service over the past 22 years as Company Secretary and Director. Mrs Sarcar has received many awards and acolades for her dedication and continues as a board member.

Music School Development

Swar Samrat Maestro Ali Akbar Khan is no more
Dr Ali Akbar Khan who was described by late Lord Yehudi Menuhin as the Mozart of Indian classical music has passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday 18 June 2009 after long illness at his residence in California, USA.
He was a honoured Patron of Surdhwani and gave a memorable performance for Surdhwani in Wolverhampton in 1996. He will live in the meomry of the lovers of Indian classical music throughout the world as Swar Samrat for ever. He has left a void which will be very difficult to be filled in the forseeable future.He will be missed by millions of music lovers all over the world.

Honours for Maitreyee Sarcar, the Company Secretary of Surdhwani
Mrs Maitreyee Sarcar joined a select band of people when she received the Glory of India award in London on Saturday 28 June 2008.
The past recipients of the award include people such as Late her Holiness Mother Teresa, former Vice- President of India B D Jatti, Sir Michael Athur, Lord Parekh, Lord Rana, Lord Dholokia, Baroness Flather, Sunil Gavaskar, just to name a few.
The India International Friendship Society [IIFS] selected Mrs Maitreyee Sarcar for the prestigious “The Glory of India Award” in recognition of her outstanding contributions as a Non Resident Indian to the building of Indo-British friendship through her cultural work as the Director/Company Secretary of Surdhwani.
The award was presented to Maitreyee by Hon’ble Shri Madhava Chandra, the Minister (International Organisations) of High Commission of India (UK), Dr Bhishma Narain Singh, Hon’ble Governor of Assam & Tamil Nadu, Rt Hon’ble Lord Mohamed Iltaf Sheikh and Mr Gauhar Nawab of London, Chairman of Euro Hotel International Ltd at a glittering Friendship Banquet held on Saturday, 28 June at the Radisson SAS Portman Hotel, Portman Square in London.
Maitreyee received the Honorary Fellowship of the University of Wolverhampton in 2002 and was elected as the Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2005.

Two New Board Members for Surdhwani
Mr Stefan Cartwright and Mr Ian Cruise-Taylor have joined the board of Surdhwani with effect from 19 July 2008
Mr Stefan Cartwright is a composer and musician. He is the founder and director of Resona, a company which promotes awareness of the possibilities of music and helps people to develop their innate musical capacity. He was formerly communications director of the innovative London based design group Rechord, who in 2000 was commissioned to design Surdhwani's website. Stefan is a life member of Surdhwani.

Mr Ian Cruise-Taylor is the Chief Executive of Connexions in the Black Country, working with and for young people and the community for 40 years. Ian is a musician, a music lover and is a member of Surdhwani.

Two great losses for the World of Indian Classical Music
The illustrious light classical singer Sipra Bose from Kolkata passed away on 22nd April 2008. She toured with Surdhwani in 1996 in UK and won many admirers here as well as in many parts of the world with her exquisite voice. She will be missed by many all over the world.
Tabla maestro Pandit Kishan Maharaj from Banares passed away on 4th May 2008. He was one if the brightest super stars of the music world, particularly in the field of classical music. He was a giant among the tabla maestros who ruled the classical music world during the past decades. It was an end of an era although his disciples such as Pandit Kumar Bose are flying his flag with pride.

Chief Executive of Surdhwani Steps Down
Surdhwani has undergone a reshuffle of its office bearers as a result of a re-organisation of its board of directors recently. Mr Sistachar Sarcar, who founded and led the organisation for twenty years has stepped down as a result of a reshuffle. Mr Kanak Rai Ramanlal Bhatt, the current treasurer will take over from Mr Sarcar with effect from 1 April 2008 three months ahead of the date initially agreed by the board.
Mr Bhatt became a Patron member of Surdhwani in April 2005 and subsequently joined the board of Surdhwani on 17 September 2005. He was elected as the treasurer on 25 November 2006.
Mr Bhatt retired from British Vita plc in 2001.
Mr Vineet Chugh will take over from Mr Bhatt as the treasurer. The 35 year old Mr Chugh is an IT consultant from Kolkata and has considerable experience in business management. He became a member of Surdhwani in 2000 and subsequently became a Life member at the end of the year.
Mr David Anthony Law remains the Chair of the board of directors and Mrs Maitreyee Sarcar will continue as the Company Secretary.

Surdhwani Falls Victim of the Axe of Arts Council England, West Midlands
Surdhwani has lost its appeal against the decision of the Arts Council England, West Midlands not to renew the revenue funding for Surdhwani beyond 31 March 2008.It is bound to cause great financial hardship for the company and will adverseley affect its capacity to provide its service to the community. Nevertheless, the directors are determined to fight for its survival. The programmes already arranged upto July 2008 will go ahead as announced.

Surdhwani Goes on the Air
14 years after the first broadcast called Raga - Rang by Surdhwani on Challenge FM, part of BBC Radio WM, SURTARANG (which means wave of melody), a radio programme produced by Surdhwani was broadcasted on WCR FM (Wolverhampton Community Radio) - Voice of Wolverhampton on 101.8 from 4th April 2007. This is a unique opportunity for connoisseuers of Indian classical music in the West Midlands region, particularly in the Wolverhampton area to listen to Indian classical music regularly on the radio. The programme is also available on the Internet.
Mr Sistachar Sarcar and Mrs Maitreyee Sarcar, two honorary directors of Surdhwani volunteered to present the show. The programme is broadcasted from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm and will be on the air every Wednesday at the same time. The programme will include Indian classical music as well as news and views every Wednesday. Surdhwani is looking for volunteers to present the programme. Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts for the Chief Executive of Surdhwani

Look out for the stars in 2007
Surdhwani has invited Pandit Rajendra Prasanna (shahnai and bansuri) in June, Joydeep Ghosh (sarod)and Sarathi Chatterjee (Hindustani vocal)in July and Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee (sitar)in September 2007 for a UK tour.
Rajendra Prasanna is a descendant of the famous Prasanna Gharana which produced world famous flautists like Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. (For further information visit: www.prasannasflute.com).
Joydeep Ghosh (sarod & sursringar), the foremost torch bearer of the Shahjahanpur sarod Gharana.(for further information please visit http://sarod.8m.com/. Ashwiniji's final concert for Surdhwani on 14 October 2006 at the Arena Theatre in Wolverhampton, UK, was the icing on a cake. The audience was held spell bound by her amazing virtuoso performance. She proved herself to be an emerging super star in the firmament of Indian classical vocal music.

Funding from The National Lottery through Arts Council England for Surdhwani
Surdhwani has received a grant of up to £21,500 from the National Lottery through the Arts Council England for touring sitar virtuoso Pandit Kushal Das (sitar & surbahar)with Biplab Bhattacharya (tabla) in May, sarod virtuoso Ustad Aashish Khan with Vishnu Sahai (tabla) in June and the eminent female classical vocalist from Mumbai Dr Ashwini Bhide Deshpande with Sri Viswanath Shirodkar (tabla) and Smt Seema Shirodkar (harmonium) in October.
